Professor Burns and the Lilac Field is the musical project and stage name of social movement scholar, writer, and professor Sean Burns. Native to California, Burns’ songs reflect his affection for the people, ecology, and emancipatory, trickster spirit so defining of the West Coast cultureshed. Burns earned his Ph.D. in the History of Consciousness Department at UC Santa Cruz, and his first book, Archie Green: The Making of a Working Class Hero, was awarded the CLR James Book of the Year in 2012. He plays a 1942 Martin 0-15 guitar, and is the Director of Student Programs at UC Berkeley’s Blum Center for Developing Economies.
The Lilac Field is a rotating collection of musicians, from many other great California bands, including, at any given time and space, the fabulous: Courtney Browne, Aaron Kierbel, Todd Sickafoose, Dave Mihaly, Lathan Spaulding, Adam Kirk, Ara Anderson, Adam ‘Tree’ Burstein, Zach Gill, Lebo, Steve Adams, Brandon Essex, Otto Huber, Jimmy Mitchell and more.
